Modernizing Our Fleet of Generation to Use Fuel Efficiently As Possible
Like cars, some power plants use
fuel more efficiently than others. And like cars, modernizing a fleet of power
generating resources increases fuel efficiency. Since 2006, FMPA has added three new units. With these additions and improvements, FMPA is able to generate each megawatt of electricity with nearly 9% less
fuel.
Here's how FMPA is modernizing its
fleet of generation: Key West: In 2006, FMPA built a 47
MW low sulfur oil-fired combustion turbine located at Keys Energy Services’
Stock Island Generating Facility. The unit provides power during times of peak
demand, and it can do so as much as 20% more efficiently than some of the units
that currently provide a peaking function.
Treasure Coast Energy Center Unit 1: In 2008, FMPA constructed a
high-efficient unit near Fort Pierce, Fla., that uses clean-burning natural
gas. The Treasure
Coast Energy Center generates power 40% more efficiently than the
generation it replaced.
Cane Island Unit 4: In 2011, FMPA and Kissimmee Utility
Authority expanded Cane Island
Power Park by constructing a fourth high-efficiency electrical generator. This
new unit is one of the cleanest and most efficient plants in Florida. Its
projected air emissions are well below Ambient Air Quality Standards
established to protect human health and the environment.
