Proven, Reliable Technologies Like Our Clean Existing Fleet of Generation
FMPA and its members recognize the importance of environmental stewardship. Clean-burning natural gas is the largest component of FMPA’s existing fleet of generation. Natural gas, the cleanest fossil fuel, reduces overall emission levels and helps the environment remain clean and healthy. Coal-fired generation only accounts for 18% of FMPA’s total portfolio, whereas nearly 50% of the United States’ electricity is generated from coal. Examples of FMPA’s clean existing fleet of generation include: - Cane Island Power Park: Located in Northwest Osceola County, Fla., the site is jointly owned by FMPA and Kissimmee Utility Authority and home to four generating units that use clean-burning natural gas to produce a total of 710 megawatts of electricity. Unit 4, the newest unit, began commercial
operation in June 2011 and is one
of the most efficient, cleanest plants in Florida. The unit is expected to
operate a high percentage of the year, producing power for FMPA.
Treasure Coast Energy Center:
Located in Fort Pierce, Fla., this site is wholly owned by FMPA and operated under
contract by Fort Pierce Utilities Authority. Treasure Coast Unit 1 began operating in
2008 and uses advanced environmental control
technologies that make it one of the lowest emission and highest efficiency
plants in Florida. In its first three years of
operation, Unit 1 has produced 4.9
million
megawatt hours of electricity and operated 97% of the time it was available for service.
